My Non-Negotiables in Formulation
Let me be honest with you, building a beauty brand from scratch means I've had to say no. A lot. No to formulas that looked gorgeous on paper but stung my cheeks. No to shades that looked great in swatches but disappeared on Indian skin tones. No to ingredients that smelled lovely but quietly caused harm over time. And honestly? Every one of those nos has shaped what SVAM Beauty is today.
So here's what actually goes on behind the scenes when we're developing a new formula.
I Test It On Myself. Before Anyone Else !
I have rosacea. I've always been open about it, you can literally see it on my face, so there's no hiding it. What that means for our formulation process is that I am the first test subject, always. If something tingles, reddens, or irritates my skin, it doesn't matter how beautiful the finish is. It's out.
The logic is simple: if a formula troubles skin as reactive as mine, it will trouble someone else's too , someone with acne, someone with sensitivity, someone managing pigmentation. Our SVAM Intelligent Clean™ must be safe for everyone who reaches for it, not just the lucky few with forgiving skin.
Made for India. Actually Made for India.
This one frustrates me, and I'll tell you why. A huge chunk of what's available here whether it's international imports or locally benchmarked formulas was never designed for our climate, our heat, our humidity, or our skin. When I first started working with international vendors, they were sending us foundations in the palest shades imaginable. Blushes in icy pinks and cool oranges that would disappear on most Indian complexions.
We are warm, neutral, cool, olive, we are everything. And our beauty formulation standards need to reflect that reality. It took time to get our partners aligned, but today every formula submitted to us must perform in our humid, hot conditions and must be developed with India's full spectrum of undertones in mind.
Fragrance Is a Hard No And Here's Why That Matters for Your Lips
I'd rather live with the natural scent of raw materials than mask it with something that might cause harm. Fragrance on skin as sensitive as mine means burning. It means tingling. And in lip products specifically, repeated exposure to added flavours can actually worsen lip pigmentation, something so many Indian women already deal with.
This is why our Lip Crayons and Lip Liners are completely fragrance- and flavour-free. Shades like Born to Lead, Game Changer, and Know Your Worth deliver full, unapologetic colour without anything quietly working against your skin. I know some of you love a scented lip product, but this is where we need to educate and shift the conversation. Your lips deserve better.
The Ingredient List Is Non-Negotiable
Our SVAM Intelligent Clean™ approach means we follow European cosmetic regulations, some of the most stringent in the world and go beyond them where we can. No parabens, no phthalates, no formaldehyde, no lead, no cadmium. We are vegan and cruelty-free. Every ingredient is thoughtfully selected for ingredient safety, for performance, and for suitability in our specific climate and conditions.
And here's something I've learned the hard way through years of formulation work: Ingredient quality is directly tied to what goes into making a formula perform. Better raw materials, more rigorous testing, cleaner activities - these things have a real cost. At SVAM Beauty, we've chosen not to cut those corners, because the women reaching for our products deserve formulas built with the same care we'd want for ourselves. Our entire range of SVAM Beauty Products are built on that premise.
That's the edit. These aren't rules I made up; they come from years of testing on my own skin, rejecting formula after formula, and asking: would I put this on someone I love? At SVAM Beauty, we are building for you, your skin, your undertone. And every formula we make is our way of saying: you deserve nothing less.
